Metro will not be going to the RMAC tournament as a frustrating first season for Coach Oates came to an end Saturday. Â Metro dropped both games to CSU-Pueblo 14-8 and 10-6 in the doubleheader. Â Metro ended the season 15-31 overall and 12-28 in the RMAC. Â Now they lose four Seniors in Evan Claus, Ryan Hutchinson, Ty Jacobs, and Robbie Nickels. Â Now Metro will head into the offseason and here are three things sure to be on Coach Oates’s off season wish list. Â
1. Experience
This team had three freshman starting pitchers, a first time 1st baseman in Daryl Baca, and a freshman third baseman in Darren Schulthies. Â That doesn’t even begin to cover the outfield where they had freshman Mitch Gibbons in center. Â This is a team that needed to take reps. Â They needed this season to get to know one another and to get used to the speed of the game at this level. Â There is no easy way to speed up this process unfortunately and thus this season was a struggle. Â Next year though those guys need to use this experience and come in ready to play right away. Â
2. Consistency
With a young team you are going to get more ups and downs, but there were far too many this season for Coach Oates liking. Â This was evidenced in the one big inning that they would often give up to blow themselves right out of games. Â In division II baseball you simply can’t relax for a half inning without teams making you pay. Â This team made 92 errors this season compared to 66 for their opponents. Â You can’t overcome that big of a margin and the only reason for that many errors is a lack of focus. Â This team has to get comfortable with the grind of the baseball season. Â On a Saturday you might be on the field for six hours and outside for eight and you have to be locked in that whole time. Â
3. A Number One Pitcher
Metro needs a pitcher to emerge to stop the runs that teams are going on against them.  They need that pitcher who gives the whole team confidence every time they step on the mound.  The two main candidates are Freshman pitcher Mike Thill and Junior Justin Arceneaux.  Both have the stuff to be that pitcher for the team, but they both need to push one another to get better this off season and be the guy.  My personal pick is Arceneaux due to his experience and he has the confidence every time he steps on the mound. Â
Metro State began the youth movement this year, and next year it is time to cash in on all the time Coach Oates put into these players this season. Â The final Coach Oates Show can be heard this Thursday from 12pm to 1pm or catch up on all the shows at gometrostate.com!Â

Metro State fell 8-3 Friday to Nebraska Kearney at Regis University to be eliminated from the RMAC tournament. Â Aubree Maul pitching her third game in two days took the loss. Â Metro never lead after Kearney got a two out run in the first inning. Â The Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the second but than Kearney opened it up getting 4 runs in the third inning. Â They added two more in the fourth an fifth for the 7-1 lead. Â Metro brought in Clark twice more to get to the final 8-3 score. Â Metro’s season now will end at 26-27. Â So lets look ahead to see what this team needs going forward next season. Â
1. A second Pitcher
Metro has a great ace coming back in Aubree Maul, but they need either Randolph or Moss to step up to start taking series 3-1 during the season. Â It was obvious in the tournament that Maul was the only pitcher Coach Lansford felt comfortable going to and you can’t win a tournament that way.
2. Protect Tillery
Kelsey Tillery is playing amazing in that leadoff role, but Metro needs someone to step up in the two hole to protect her. Â I look to a Mary Towner to keep improving and step up into that role for Metro thus bridging the gap to Chelsea Brew and Aubree Maul in the middle of the lineup. Â
3. Get Older and Wiser
This team was so young and inexperienced that you knew that they were going to have speed bumps this season. Â So really the number one thing they need in the offseason is just more time together. Â Once they get that than some of the silly errors will go away as well as being more comfortable in crunch time with the bats. Â The future is bright see you next year Metro Softball!

Metro Softball lost a heart breaker in their first game of the RMAC Tournament, losing 3-2 to #3 seed Fort Lewis. Â Metro never trailed in the game until Fort Lewis took the lead for good on a two run double from Natalie Janes in the bottom of the sixth. Â Maul took her first ever career loss vs. Fort Lewis allowing only 2 earned runs. Â Kelsey Tillery hit her 23rd home run of the season in the third inning to give Metro a 1-0 lead. Â In the bottom of the third Fort Lewis evened things up on an error from Susie Oury brought in Erica Conley who was at third after Chelsea Brew misplayed a fly ball in right field. Â Brittany Padilla walked with the bases loaded to give Metro a 2-1 lead that held up until the sixth inning. Â After the loss Metro was forced to play a second game with their tournament lives on the line vs. the #2 seed CSU Pueblo. Â

Coach Lansford leading Metro In the RMAC Tourney
Once again Aubree Maul threw a complete game allowing only one run the entire game vs. the Thunderwolves. Â Molly Clark took home in the first inning to give Metro a 1-0 lead off of a wild pitch from CSU Pueblo. Â Clark came home once again in the third on a single from Aubree Maul helping her own case. Â CSU Pueblo got their lone run in the fifth after a lead off double. Â Metro brought around an insurance run in the sixth after Mary Towner was brought in by a double by Susie Oury with two outs and Maul took care of Pueblo in the top of the seventh for the victory. Maul only allowed four hits and had five strikeouts to keep Metro alive.
After the victory Metro will play tomorrow at 1pm at Regis vs. the winner of Regis vs. Nebraska Kearney.  Tune in to KMET Radio for all your Metro Softball RMAC action!

Aubree Maul got two victories for Metro State Softball over Chadron State 5-3 in eight innings and than a wild 13-12 victory coming on in relief for Jordyn Randolph.  Maul was not as dominant as she was against Adams State but she continues to get Metro huge victories in the last series of the regular season.  Metro remains very much in play to  raise their seed in the RMAC with these two victories they are only two games in the loss column out of first behind Mines.  Most top teams split their series and Colorado Christian dropped two huge games to Colorado Mesa to fall in the standings.  As the season wraps up this weekend every RMAC team is already in playoff mode as a few losses can wreck your season.  If Metro can take all four from Chadron I believe that they will get a four seed with Fort Lewis, Mesa, and Colorado Christian all splitting tomorrow. Â
Right now you can tell Coach Lansford is all in to try to get as high of a seed as she possibly can throwing Maul out there in both games. Â With Mines at the number one seed getting a four or a five seed is huge for Metro to avoid Mines with Kelly Unkrich until the finals. Â Metro played beautiful softball against Adams State last weekend which you simply can’t say today against Chadron State as they blew leads late in both games. Â In the second game of the doubleheader after two innings they were up 9-0 before giving it all back to be tied 12-12 heading into the seventh. Â In game one they were forced to go to extras after blowing a lead there as well. Â
That is not the point that Metro fans should take out of today. Â On a day that saw a lot of teams split doubleheaders, Metro State got two victories that they needed. Â Their ace Aubree Maul was there when they needed her on the mound with another two victories. Â

This past weekend Metro had a must win four game series in front of themselves vs. the Adams State Grizzlies at Auraria Fields. Â Metro rose to the occasion on winning three of four to all but secure a place for themselves in the RMAC tournament. Â Adams State came in one game behind the Roadrunners for the final RMAC tournament spot and left Auraria Fields down three. Â Metro split the first doubleheader on Friday winning behind a three hit Aubree Maul gem in game one winning 9-1 in six innings. Â The second game Linda Hernandez shut the Roadrunners down getting Adams the 6-0 victory over the Roadrunners. Â Than on Saturday Maul came back and threw a one hitter to get Metro the 2-0 victory and than Randolph shut down Adams State after giving up three first inning runs as the Roadrunners responded to score six runs to get themselves the 6-0 victory and the series win.

Coach Lansford has the team rounding into shape
Metro is now officially the dark horse team in the RMAC tournament that no one wants to play. Â The young players like Susie Oury get better every time they hit the field as she scored the game winning run in game one Saturday after leading off with a triple and brought home Mary Towner for a huge insurance run in the second game. Â The seniors have big game experience as Molly Clark was on the team that went to the College World Series and is a former MVP of the RMAC tournament in 2010. Â Kasey Nichols the only other senior is hitting a scorching .385 in the three hole. Â
Most importantly Metro’s ace who admitted on the Coach Lansford Show (every Thursday at 1pm) that she had to adjust to being the ace of the staff and wasn’t expecting it. Â Now in a key stretch of the season she has won her last four games on the mound capping it off with her one hitter Saturday. Â She looks confident throwing any of her pitches at any time either inside or outside. Â The Grizzlies were off balance all weekend and never got close to bothering Maul on the mound. Â Now Randolph is still waiting to find her best stuff consistently, this weekend she found something much more valuable. Â She found a bulldog mentality on the mound. Â In her appearance Friday she was in trouble almost every inning. In all of the first four innings she allowed a baserunner to reach scoring position and only allowed two earned runs until the seventh inning where she ran out of gas and allowed a grand slam by D.J Consonero. Â Than on Saturday after getting smacked around in the first inning she allowed no more runs the rest of the way giving her offense time to come alive for the three go ahead runs in the sixth. Â With her out there battling Metro had a chance to win both games she threw which is all you can ask of your pitchers. Â
With one road series vs. Chadron State the once lowly Roadrunners are rounding into shape and moving up the standings… watch out RMAC. Â Â

Metro Softball is taking on Adams State this Friday and Saturday in a four game series that will determine who makes it in to the RMAC tournament. Â Metro comes in one game ahead of Adams State and only two games out of 2nd place in the RMAC. Â The first doubleheader on Friday will start at 12pm. Â The Saturday doubleheader will get underway at 11am. Â All four games can be heard on KMET Radio. Â Here are three things to keep an eye on to ensure a Metro State victory.
1. The Connectors
Metro has Kelsey Tillery leading off and leading Division II in home runs. Â Kelsey Nichols and Chelsea Brew have also been fairly consistent in their production. Â The key for Metro taking 3 of 4 from Fort Lewis on the road this past weekend was players like Molly Clark and Susie Oury stepping up and getting on base. Â Oury in the nine hole had a career high 5 rbis in game three vs. Fort Lewis. Â Tillery hits .347 if the Roadrunners can get players on in front of her or if Clark protects her in the two hole than Metro will have the offense going all weekend. Â
2. 2nd Pitcher
Metro has an ace in Aubree Maul that 9 times out of 10 is going to pitch well enough to keep the Roadrunners in the game. Â Maul comes into this weekend with a 3.69 ERA and a record of 13-7. Â The Roadrunners need Jordyn Randolph to have another stellar performance in the second game of this weekends doubleheaders. Â While Maul picked up two victories against Fort Lewis, it was Randolph who threw the most impressive game of the weekend blanking the Skyhawks 7-0 while walking no one and taking a no hitter into the 5th inning. Â Randolph is a contact pitcher who needs to keep the ball down in the zone and will be responsible for getting Metro the series win. Â
3. Lindquist and Only Lindquist
Rebecca Lindquist is a special softball player. Â She comes into the series with 50 rbi and batting a ridiculous .483. Â All of that being said she is only one player. Â The Metro pitchers can’t get so focused on Lindquist that the relax with the hitters around her in the lineup. Â If there is no one on base when she comes up than you have more options on how to pitch to her. Â If the other runners are on than she gets opportunities to really do some damage. Â Metro has to respect Lindquist, but not forget that players like Katelyn Lovato hit .437. Â
This weekend remember to tune in to KMET Radio Friday at 12pm and Saturday at 11am!Â

Softball played six games over spring break going 5-1 making them 9-3 over their past 12 games. First on Wednesday Metro swept Nebraska Kearney in a two game series winning the first game 15-6 and the second game 7-3. Than they took 3 of 4 from Western New Mexico in two doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Metro won the first two games winning 8-0 and 9-5 on Saturday. Than on Sunday Metro split losing the first game 14-5 before winning the second game 10-2. Metro is now 5th in the RMAC tied in the loss column with Colorado Mesa for 4th having played two less games in the RMAC thus far in the season. Metro will play a four game set vs. Colorado Mines this Saturday and Sunday only right here on KMET Radio! Now without any further ado three things we learned about Metro Softball this past weekend!
1. Pitching staff consistently inconsistent
This is a pitching staff where Aubree Maul is the only one who was even on the team last season. So some speed bumps are to be expected and they are still working through that as a staff. Catcher Kelsey Tillery came on the show last week and talked about finally getting her communication going with Randolph. On the one extreme this week you have Maul almost throwing a no hitter shutting out Western New Mexico 8-0 in 5 innings allowing just one hit. Than the next day against the exact same team she only lasted 1 1/3 inning allowing 8 hits and 6 runs. You can do the same thing with Moss and Randolph showing flashes while also having rough games. For the team to continue their run into the RMAC tournament they are going to need more consistency from the pitching staff.
2. Tillery Leading Off Works for This Team
Tillery is not your typical lead off hitter in terms of the fact that she does not have the speed you normally see in a lead off hitter but she really works there and feels comfortable in that spot. She has gone 18-42 since being moved into the lead off role hitting .430. She also drew two intentional walks on Sunday from Western New Mexico. She now has 16 home runs and 39 rbi on the season. Outside of her on field production the other advantage is that now all the speed is at the bottom of the lineup making the entire lineup tough to pitch to. Metro has Molly Clark hitting 6th meaning 6 through 9 in the line up can all steal bases making any base runners dangerous when the top of the line up comes up.Â
3. This is a Team Finding a Way to Win
Not every game they won this weekend was pretty, but they found a way to go 5-1 when they needed to, to put themselves right back in the RMAC hunt. They were down in the first game 6-3 vs Kearney before storming back to win as Maul gutted out all six innings despite not having her best stuff. They also came back in the second game vs Western New Mexico on Saturday after being down 5-3 to win 9-5. One thing you can always say about this team is that they never give in and will always try to grind out the victory something that really pays off in the tournament setting with so many games in a few days. Â

On Monday at 6pm MST the winner of the NCAA Division II Women’s Central Region will be decided when #1 Wayne State takes on #2 Metro State for the right to go to San Antonio and the Elite Eight. Â These are the two best teams as evidenced by Metro beating Fort Lewis by 18 to get to this game and Wayne State beating Augustana by 23 points. Â Both come in full of confidence and it should be an amazing game that you can only hear on KMET Radio. Â Here are the three keys for a Metro State victory.
1. Get Caley Dow going
In both of the losses that Wayne State has they have had a post player kill them on the inside. Â First against Mary it was Linda Murray with 20 points and Augustana in their lone victory over them had 25 points from Alex Feeney inside. Â If they have a weakness it is that while they have length inside they don’t have that one big time post defender to defend someone like Dow. Â For this reason, they play a 2-3 matchup zone, but Metro still has to find a way to get Dow going inside. Â
2. Control the Crowd
A sellout is expected at Rice Auditorium for Wayne State which will give tons of energy to Wayne State. Â Metro has to survive the first five minutes and then work to take this crowd out of it. Â The crowd will be loud but they can’t allow that to speed them up or feel like they have to respond to every basket from Wayne right away. Â This is where the experience of Metro in big time games has to come up huge to keep them calm. Â
3. Close out to shooters
Wayne State has 3 players shooting over 40% from three point range and shoot 39% from behind the arc as a team. Â In the first half vs. Augustana, Wayne State was 6-10 from 3 point range and ended that game early on. Â If Metro can stop those shooters I think they have an advantage inside where Wayne should struggle to score on a consistent basis.
Tune into KMET Radio at 6pm MST for all the action live from Wayne, Nebraska!

Metro got the 60-42 victory over Fort Lewis as they cruised into the Sweet 16 where they will play the #1 seed Wayne State University. Â Before looking ahead (which we will do tomorrow here on KMET Radio) lets look back at the Fort Lewis game and three things we learned.
1. Any questions about the health of Cervantes have been answered
Cervantes lead the team with 18 points 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Â She looked completely back to herself on both offense and defense. Â She was all over the floor on defense and came up with huge buckets late in the shot clock. Â Also, she was back to her normal substitution schedule a good sign for Metro State fans.Â
2. Playing a zone against Metro doesn’t work
Metro looked comfortable all game against Fort Lewis with the Skyhawks playing a 2-3 zone for the most part. Â They got good shots all game as evidenced by the fact that they shot over 50% in the first half. Â You compare that to the physical Minnesota Duluth that forced Metro to under 30% in the first half of their first round game and the choice is obvious. Â You have to get into Metro State and make them uncomfortable and in a zone you simply can’t do that. Â (For those of you wondering Wayne State plays a match up 2-3 zone.)
3. When Kristin Valencia makes outside jumpers Metro is almost unbeatable
Kristin was 5-6 from the field and didn’t miss a single shot inside the arc. Â When she is playing like this it becomes almost impossible to guard Metro State as you can’t sink off of her to guard Dow. Â Dow one on one inside is a problem inside for anyone and also it allows driving lanes for Cervantes inside. Â Obviously, you have to play Kristin Valencia for her defense (ask Dana Schreibvogel) but when her offense is going as well I don’t know how to defend this Metro State team.
You can hear Metro vs. Wayne State at 6pm Monday only on KMET Radio!Â

1. Metro State has to take better care of the ball
In the first half Metro turned the ball over 15 times in the first half. They turned the ball over 5 times in the 2nd half. They scored 19 points in the first half compared to 39 points in the second half. Metro is a tough team to guard when they can just get a shot up on the rim. They have a lot of weapons, but if Metro loses in this tournament it will be because they didn’t take care of the ball. This is not exactly comforting considering they play Fort Lewis next a team that forces turnovers with a trapping press.
2. Cervantes is that senior who just won’t lose
Cervantes is a little banged up right now, but she pushed through it and was all over the floor on defense and hit some huge shots when her team needed it. She had 7 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks. That does not even begin to describe how much she made her presence felt on defense. It was her best defensive performance I have seen her have thus far this season.
3. Dow is ready for postseason basketball
She looked a little lost against Western State and unprepared for the speed and physicality. In the first half against Duluth it was more of the same. Than in the second half she came alive against 6’5 Von Winkle for 16 2nd half points. Metro is going to need her inside to make it to San Antonio and her second half is great news for them.
Tune in to KMET Radio tomorrow starting at 2:30pm as the Metro Men play Adams State and then will come in live to Lady Roadrunners vs Fort Lewis. KMET Radio is your home for Metro State sports!

March 9th, 2012
The best time of the year is here for the Metro State women’s basketball team. Â This is a team that has been on a mission to reach this time of the year and today it kicks off at 2pm vs Minnesota Duluth. Â The game can be heard right here on KMET Radio so be sure to tune in. Â So without any further ado here are the 3 keys for the game today vs. Duluth.
1. The battle of the boards
This is a game between two bullies going at it. Â Katrina Newman leads the way for Duluth with 8.1 rebounds as Duluth leads the NSIC with 15.9 Â offensive rebounds. Â On the other side Metro has five players with at least 5 rebounds per game. Â They lead all of Division II basketball teams with a +14.1 rebounding margin. Â Whoever wins this probably wins the game. Â
2. Turnovers
In any game the turnover battle will be very important, but this is especially true for Metro State. Â Metro averages 14.2 turnovers per game and force 15.2 turnovers. Â On the other side the Bulldogs commit 15.9 but force 18.6 per game. Â They have four blocks per game and 9.3 steals. Â If Metro can hold onto the ball they should be able to impose their will but lately turnovers have been a problem for them. Â
3. Pace of the game
Here is where Metro can really impose their will on a game.  They can go ten deep without a big drop off so you know they are not going to wear out.  On the other side Duluth is a team that outscores opponents 837-664 in 1st half compared to just 902-887 in the 2nd half.  Metro needs to push the pace to make the bigs for Duluth wear out especially their 6’5 center Emma Van Winkle. Â
Once again the game starts at 2pm right here on KMET Radio!

When the Metro Women fell 70-66 on Friday to Western State in the RMAC Shootout excuses were easy to come by.
You could have blamed the performance on the new gym (which by the way is a terrible place to hold your tournament with dead spots on the floor, three different three point lines, and cement behind the baskets.) You could have blamed it on the the fact that Metro was trying to beat a hungry Western State team who simply needed the game more than the Roadrunners. Lastly, you could have blamed it on the injury to Cervantes who went down with an ankle sprain when she had 9 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds with 11:02 left to go in the game. All of those partially explain the loss, but what this loss really showed is that Metro needs to find more creators. Â
When Cervantes was in Metro was figuring out Western State’s defense and was carving it up inside. Cervantes already had 5 assists in the second half alone. Western was going to have to change what they were doing because the wily senior guard had figured them out and was getting her teammates shots. (A side note to future Metro State opponents, don’t play zone against Cervantes unless you like losing. You have been warned.) When Cervantes went down Western went on a 7-0 run as Metro just couldn’t score. Â
Metro had a huge size advantage all game with a 5’3 Trujillo often guarding Candice Kohn who is 5’10. This forced them to front inside and help quickly against the lob over the top. To the Mountaineers credit they were helping very quickly which meant the window for the pass was smaller. Cervantes would make that pass or get herself inside to take advantage of the defense having to rotate. Metro couldn’t get another player to take over that role. That is why they lost plain and simple.
I don’t want to make it seem as if there is no one else on the team who can take that role. Caley Dow did it earlier in the season against Fort Lewis. Jenessa Burke is a special offensive player who can do it on the perimeter. Against Western though they were not able to find that creator and a team without a creator in Division II basketball where passing windows shrink and defensive rotations are crisper, is a team doomed to lose. Â

Kyle remains in front in the woman’s predictions as both of the guys predicted a 2-0 weekend for the ladies. Â They were right as the Lady Roadrunners clinched the RMAC Regular season crown (with some help from Mines) with a big victory over Western New Mexico 77-42 behind 12 points from Kristin Valencia. Â Than they had to come from behind to beat New Mexico Highlands 63-60. Â The #15 Metro Men also made the guys look smart beating W. New Mexico 90-65 in their best game of the season according to Coach Clark. Â The next night the Roadrunners came from behind by 19 in the second half to win 75-71. Â This means the guys remain tied. Â Who will take a risk tune in next Wednesday at 1pm to the Coach Clark Show to find out!

In the film Moneyball Brad Pitt tells his team, “Just don’t make mistakes play safe, let them make the mistakes.” Â That was the theme of the weekend for Metro State Baseball as they took the season opening series over Hastings 3 games to 1. Â Metro won the first game 6-3 before losing the second 3-1 on Saturday. Â Than on Sunday Metro swept both games 12-5 and 9-8. Â Metro did not hit a home run the entire series. Â They only had one more hit in the series (32-31) and actually had a lower on base percentage than Hastings (.394 to .377). Â So how did they win these games?Â
That is right, they didn’t make mistakes. Â Metro had just 4 errors over the weekend compared to 11 for Hastings. Â That is the obvious stat that people will look to. Â Another important stat however is the fact that Metro struck out 13 times on the weekend compared to 21 for Hastings. Â That signifies a mentality. Â Metro this season is going to be a team that is looking to put the ball in play as much as possible. Â The idea is that to make someone in the field make a play. Â Home runs are great, but chasing them leads to free outs such as strike outs with the bigger swing. Â A ball in play means an opportunity for a mistake from the other team. Â Metro is playing simple fundamental baseball in the opening series and making the other team make plays to beat them. Â This season if you are going to beat Metro State baseball under new head coach Jerrid Oates, nothing is going to come for free.
Tune into the Coach Oates Show every Thursday at 12pm right here on KMET Radio. Â You can hear all the baseball and softball home games right here on KMET Radio. Â Â

In the first half vs Western New Mexico there was a moment where the Mustangs were going on a run.  Metro had jumped out to a 14-2 lead and now the Mustangs on their home floor were pushing back.  They had three straight dunks and every time the fans were rocking when they came down the floor.  The Mustangs were poised to get back into the game.  They were ready for Metro to start to wilt on the road as they did against Colorado Mesa on their last road trip.  Instead, Reggie Evans came down and hit a 15 foot jumper and than after a three pointer.  Jonathan Morse forced a foul inside to settle things down.  From there Metro never looked back and went on to win 90-65.  Reggie Evans ended up with 21 points.  Jonathan Morse had 17 points and 16 rebounds.  It  may look like it was an easy victory but the truth is that small sequence said a lot about the change in the demeanor of this team.
Early in the season Metro was ranked #1 and was running through teams they had a confidence based off of never having failed. Â Than the Colorado Mines game happened and they didn’t have that same confidence. Â So they went on a little run where if things went right than they played really well and if things went wrong than they did not respond so well as evidenced by losses to Colorado Mesa and Western State on the road. Â While they were not executing there was something deeper beneath the surface. Â They were looking for a new source of confidence. Â What this game shows is that they have found it. Â Now this team enjoys when other teams come at them with all they have. Â They enjoy when the opposing fans jeer at them. Â Quite simply this team now feels like they have had everything thrown at them and they have learned from all the earlier mistakes. Â
Early in the season the Roadrunners were like a bully who if you stood up to them had no answer.  Now they have a more quiet confidence where they feel they can take your best punch and than unleash the power bomb. New Metro Basketball Attitude Let me tell you watch out RMAC in the tournament because this new quiet confidence comes from having worked on your weaknesses after being exposed.  The Metro State men are the powerbomber now and everyone else is in trouble. Â

The Metro Basketball teams have been struggling lately and had some people questioning the championship mettle. Â (By the way I totally understand how ridiculous it sounds that to say that a team ranked 11th with 5 losses, and a team ranked 8th with two total losses have been struggling, but trust me they have.) Â The Metro Men had lost four of their last five coming into Saturday vs Nebraska Kearney and the Metro Women had almost blown a 24 point second half lead to lowly Chadron State. Â Needless to say these teams needed some things to go right. Â On Saturday almost everything went right for both teams. Â
Starting off with the #8 Lady Roadrunners you have to start with the play they got from their backup bigs inside. Â Caley Dow was struggling, but it was no problem thanks to 8 points from Amy Nelson and 7 points from Desiree Collins off the bench Metro got much needed production from the bigs off the bench. Â (See my post about friday nights game vs Chadron State.) Â Also, they finally did what we have been waiting for them to do and stepped on the throat of a inferior team. Â They were up 13 at the half and went on to outscore Kearney 48 to 26 in the second half a good sign for a team with a bad habit of letting teams hang around. Â Everyone who saw any real minutes scored at least five points showing off the impressive depth of this team as the hardest coaching decision Coach Haave had to make in this game was what squad to put out there in garbage time with everyone playing well. Â Also, if the 35 point win vs. Kearney was not enough Fort Lewis dropped a game moving them into a tie with Metro State. Â Metro holds the tiebreaker since they defeated Fort Lewis 78-51 earlier this season at home. Â
The Metro State Men came into the game against Kearney just looking for a win no matter how it came, they got a lot more. Â Metro got the win Saturday winning the game 83-73. Â First up on the positive side of things was the play of Tyler Cooper off the bench for the Roadrunners. Â Everytime he was on the floor he played great defense and brought energy to the floor, something you want from your sixth man. Â Cooper had 6 points off the bench where points have been almost impossible to come by for Coach Clark. Â Also after a rough outing against Chadron Reggie Evans got his swagger back. Â He exploded for 26 points and 8 rebounds against Kearney and was all over the place defensively. Â Lastly, Metro was involved in a close game and won down the stretch out executing Kearney. Â This has to give them some of their confidence back going into a tough road trip down to New Mexico. Â Oh yeah, and Adams State lost in double overtime to CSU-Pueblo 99-98 putting the Roadrunners back into 2nd place in the RMAC. Â
Overall you have to say it was a pretty magical night to be a part of the Metro State Basketball teams.
Remember to tune into the Coach Haave Show at 12pm every Wednesday and the Coach Clark Show every Wednesday at 1pm.

February 11th, 2012

The Metro State men’s basketball team struggled once again on Friday as the offense refused to show up for the Roadrunners as they fell to Chadron State 65-64. Â Metro was lead by Brandon Jefferson who scored 17 points and Jonathan Morse had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Â Now it is time for the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from this first loss to Chadron State since 1985. Â
The Good: Brandon Jefferson Â
The Sophomore guard looked confident and in complete control coming off the pick and roll up top with Morse or Kay. Â If anything he was too unselfish trying to get his teammates involved as he got himself into the lane almost at will. Â The future is bright as long as Jefferson is the point guard for this team. Â He seems to get better every time he steps on the floor this season.
The Bad: Reggie EvansÂ
The Senior couldn’t get inside against the defense of Chris Curtis and shot 4-14 from the field. Â He looked a little too passive until the end of the game when it was too late. Â Evans did not post up inside against Curtis a big part of his game and thus really limited himself to outside jumpers. Â Evans looked like he had really turned a corner being aggressive on offense on the road trip to Western State. Â A small step back for Evans will be interesting to see how he comes out against Kearney on Saturday.
The Ugly: The Bench Minus Tyler Cooper
Cooper had a solid game playing great defense and hitting a key three to keep Metro in the game in the first half. Â Other than that though Metro got no points from the bench and really no energy at all. Â The bench scored only 3 points against Chadron and that simply will not do. Â Coach Clark has to find a way to find a unit that will at least give some defensive energy out there so the starters can get some rest. Â Also Brotherson should be able to provide some offense he just needs a little confidence boost in this mini slump he is going through right now. Â Until the bench gets it going this team is going nowhere fast. Â

The Metro Women came out against Chadron State and played about as good of a first half as you can play. Â They started the game up 22-1 making Chadron look completely overmatched. Â Than in the last 11:45 of the game Chadron outscored Metro 30-10. Â So now we must figure out the Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from this game.
The Good- Jasmine Cervantes since the Christina Whitelaw explosion round two she has been a completely different player. Â In this game she had 12 points 13 rebounds and 3 steals. Â She is getting in passing lanes on defense and aggressively looking to create in the open floor for her team. Â Plus 13 rebounds can never be a bad thing from your point guard, never.
The Bad- The Post Players
Dow, Collins, and Nelson scored 5 points combined (all from Dow). Â Metro needs an inside punch to go along with Cervantes outside. Â Overall, I think this was just an off game for Dow, but if this team wants to win a title the posts are going to have to give them 15-20 points a game. Â Otherwise you make Metro a jump shooting team something they are not comfortable with as evidenced by their 2-12 shooting from 3 point range. Â The posts need to get a little more consistent as a group.
The Ugly: The last 11 minutes of the game. Â If you told a team to try to lose a game they might play the way Metro did the last 11 minutes of regulation. Â Metro had 5 straight turnovers at one point (all unforced). Â Metro struggled on offense and fouled on defense against Kaitlin Petri allowing her to go from 5 points at halftime to 22 points for the game. Â Metro has put together one complete game against Fort Lewis where they completely dismantled the RMAC leading Skyhawks by almost 30 points. Â The point is to get tournament victories this team is going to have to play for 4o minutes. Â The good thing is that they know it. Â

Rachel Fuenzalida The Metropolitan
The voice of Metro Basketball and Mr.KMETRADIO himself, Kyle Poland, competed along with three other members of the Office of Student Media in this years’ Amazing Race.
The Amazing Race was one of the daily installments in this years homecoming festivities, which began Feb. 6 and lasts the week. Members were asked to complete multiple tasks including riding big wheels, filling up an ice bucket with only their mouths, and running — lots of running.
Seven teams of four competed until they were either disqualified for being too far by behind, or the race was won. The teams were made up of different entities on campus like the Office Of Student Media, the Athletic Department and Campus Recreation.
Poland and his teammates placed fourth and received a coffee mug for their efforts. The athletically inclined Campus Recreation team placed first and received gift certificates from the Auraria Bookstore.
Homecoming week will conclude this Friday when the #11 ranked Mens basketball team and the # 8 ranked Women host Nebraska Kearney. Coverage starts at 5PM MST. Listen HERE

Often times you will hear the phrase, “officials don’t decide games.” I am here to tell you that this could not be further from the truth. The #12 Metro State men went down 72-67 to the #5 Colorado Mines Orediggers on Monday night. The simple fact is that while is my previous post about the Colorado Christian game I told you that we would learn all we needed to know about the Roadrunners on Monday I can’t say I learned a whole lot. The reason is that the game was called inconsistently throughout with both teams never knowing what to expect. The officials were like that one friend everyone has who has a bad temper; whistles were blown for no reason some times than other times when a call needed to be made they were no where to be seen. For that reason I can’t say that Metro is not a championship contender. I can’t say whether Trevor Wages of Mines is simply a bad match up for Jonathan Morse. I don’t know if Metro can out execute an elite team down the stretch. These are important questions that should have been answered tonight, the officials robbed us of that. I don’t want people to read this and think that all the calls went against Metro State. No there were plenty of bad calls both ways (i.e. Trevor Wages phantom third foul before halftime). Both teams should have been able to measure themselves up against one another to see where they were at in the midst of the RMAC stretch run, they were both equally wronged, and it is just sad as a fan of basketball.

February 6th, 2012

On Monday night it was a night where everyone was seeing how the Metro State basketball teams would react. For the Metro State Women they righted the ship winning 75-60 after getting embarrassed on Saturday by Christina Whitelaw and the Colorado Christian Cougars. They used a 19-3 run from the 1st half into the 2nd to pull away for good. Lets take a look at 3 things we learned from this victory.
1. Desiree Collins is a great offensive post player off the bench. In the first half she came out and scored 8 points while also creating open 3′s for Alyssa Benson outside. Collins played so well that the Roadrunners didn’t have to risk putting Caley Dow back in, in the 1st half after she had picked up two early fouls. Collins is very aggressive and decisive in the post. She makes her move quickly making a double team hard. When Dow graduates she has shown that the team will be in very good hands.
2. Jasmine Cervantes can be a defensive difference maker. Her stat line for this game is a ridiculous 15 points 17 rebounds, and 5 steals, but for now I want to focus on the steals. In this game you saw Cervantes make the perimeter players for Mines uncomfortable and try to get deflections something you would think she would be able to do consistently. She has amazing court vision offensively, and against Mines she used that vision to get into passing lanes and wreak havoc. Cervantes we now know (we have always suspected) is the type of player who can put up Christina Whitelaw numbers out there defensively. With the type of defender Kristin Valencia is, that is a scary thought for the RMAC.
3. This is a very even keeled team Coach Haave has. They didn’t seem overly angry coming out against Mines after the loss. Nor did they panic when they fell behind by five in the first half. Sure it is fun to see a team get fired up and yell and scream, but come tournament time that is wasted energy. You are playing a lot of games and you can’t get too emotional over every run that gets made in the course of a game.Â
So Metro State got the win and all is right in the world yet again.Â

February 4th, 2012

The #12 Metro State Men’s basketball team took the floor with warm ups that had a huge CS on the front of them. It stood for clean slate after two disappointing road losses to Western State and Colorado Mesa. The team came out and unleashed the athletes. Here are three things we learned from the 77-44 drubbing over Colorado Christian.Â
1. Reggie Evans is back… like really back. He scored at least 20 for the third straight game and more importantly led the team in rebounds with 11. Reggie Evans was in attack mode and when he is in that mode you can live with him missing a few shots (he was 10-21 from the field). Evans in attack mode makes Jefferson and Miller look to be aggressive and drive as well which is when Metro is at their best. They drive off of teams doubling Morse in the post and than teams have to be careful about the closeout which gives them open three pointers. Â
2. Look I want to tell you that we can learn other things from this game. I want to tell you that Nicolas Kay getting 13 rebounds matters. I want to tell you that the bench scoring means that they have come alive for good. I want to tell you that 17 points and 10 rebounds for Jonathan Morse means that he is back from an off weekend. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you any of those things. Colorado Christian is not in a place to test the Roadrunners in any of those areas. Metro was still only up seven at halftime (I am nitpicking I know). The point is that Colorado Christian is in no position to challenge Metro on defense or on offense. A team that is in a position is #5 Colorado Mines who visits the Auraria Events Center Monday at 7pm. That is the game where we will see just whether this team is a championship contender, or a just a very good team.
Tune in this Monday at 5pm and 7pm to hear the Metro State Men’s and Women’s basketball teams take on Colorado Mines!

Heading into the match up between the #3 ranked Lady Roadrunners and Colorado Christian Cougars many people thought that the game being postponed due to snow was simply a stay of execution for the Cougars. After all, back in January when the Cougars upset the than undefeated Roadrunners it seemed like a fluke. Metro missed shots they normally make and simply couldn’t defend Christina Whitelaw on the pick and roll. Christian came in 10-11 compared to 18-1 for Metro. I understand why people thought that (I thought that), but what everyone forgot about is the power of the match up.Â
What I mean is that sometimes there are teams that no matter what their record is they are just built to give your team problems. So lets look at what Colorado Christian does that causes so many problems for Metro:
1. They have a great defensive point guard to defend Cervantes. Everyone will want to look at the 27 points Whitelaw scored and overlook the most valuable thing that she does. She defends Cervantes and makes her feel uncomfortable. Holding her 4-12 from the field and she never was orchestrating the offense as she normally does. If you are going to beat Metro you can’t let Cervantes get everyone else shots and be the floor general. Whitelaw has been able to keep her from controlling the game and that is step one to beating Metro.
2. Colorado Christian has five ball handlers and shooters. This is key because it forces Caley Dow out onto the perimeter. No one has a player who can guard Dow in the post so you have to make her pay on the other end by driving against her and shooting 15 foot jumpers. Metro is a big team built to bully you offensively and defensively. You can’t out physical Metro State in the half court. Instead you have to be able to isolate each player and make them play one on one defense. Metro’s team defense is incredible; a post player one on one one the perimeter is a much better option.
3. You can’t get killed on the boards. Colorado Christian is smaller than Metro and most teams like that just get eaten up on the boards by the Roadrunners. CCU does a great job blocking out all 40 minutes to minimize that advantage. This requires great depth and great desire to get in there and fight for every board. CCU was only out rebounded by five 41-36. This is really the key because it means that you are minimizing the advantage of Metro State while maximizing your speed advantage on the other end.Â
It remains to be seen if these teams will meet again in the RMAC tournament, but know that next time no one will count Colorado Christian out.

We are back with predictions from Kyle Poland and Eric Lansing for the upcoming weekend of Metro State Basketball action. Below are the standings thus far with Kyle in the lead predicting the Women’s basketball games and it is still all tied up predicting the Men’s basketball results.
Women’s Basketball                  Men’s Basketball
Eric 9-3Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Eric 8-3
Kyle 10-1Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Kyle 8-3
Kyle remains in front in the woman’s predictions as Eric Lansing was scared by Caley Dow into predicting two Metro victories along with Kyle. On the Men’s side as the team dropped two games so did the guys as they failed to see two straight upsets coming for the Metro men. This week both teams are back at home, on Friday starting at 5pm they take on Colorado Christian where the Lady Roadrunners will be looking to avenge their only loss of the season. Than on Saturday at 5pm both teams take on Colorado Mines where the Metro men will be looking to spring the upset on #5 Colorado Mines. You can hear both of the games right here on KMET Radio!
Predictions
Lady Roadrunners                     Metro Men
Kyle 2-0Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Kyle 2-0
Eric 2-0Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Eric 2-0
Schedule this weekend:

This week saw the Metro State woman’s basketball team rise in the rankings up to #3 while the Metro men fell out of the top ten all the way to #12 in the rankings.   Both teams traveled to Western State and Colorado Mesa this weekend. The Metro woman won both of their games, defeating Western State 73-67 behind a huge 3 pointer from Brandi Valencia with 1:14 left in the game. They then crushed Mesa 78-40 holding the Mavericks to 22% shooting. The Metro Men on the other hand lost both games, losing to Western 70-66 despite 29 points from Senior Reggie Evans. The following night they couldn’t get the offense going and fell to the Mavericks 64-47 their lowest scoring total of the season.Â

Here are a few quick thoughts in the aftermath of Metro’s second loss of the season…
1. When Morse gets into foul trouble this is a totally different team. Both losses this season have come when Morse had to take an early seat with 2 first half fouls he forces teams to respect the post play whereas Brotherson and Kay are more finesse outside players. Morse gets second chance points and forces double teams that open up driving lanes for the big three outside. He also takes away post position inside for other teams he is the key to this team. When he can play his game unhindered by fouls this is a totally different team.
2. This team needs to find a bench scorer and fast. No points off the bench for the Roadrunners. Almost wonder if Clark will consider bringing Miller off the bench just to give that second unit a little punch offensively. Also that would give Miller more of an opportunity to play aggressively as a scorer that he is. The other main option is Freshman Nicholas Kay. He has all the tools to be a big time post scorer for the Roadrunners but has been inconsistent inside. Some games he looks like he has turned the corner but than in games like this he can become invisible. Metro needs him to be consistent it will make an off game by Morse not so deadly.
3. This is just one game. It is easy when a team loses a game they shouldn’t to overreact and say that they are not the team to win a championship and that they are overrated with fatal flaws. That is simply not the case here. Metro played awful for the first half defensively letting Townes get inside whenever he wanted and giving up free jumpers to Western State. They also made 2-16 from beyond the arc missing some wide open ones. Western State shot 57% from the field and only won by four and Metro had two chances with under a minute to tie the game up. The team had an off night and lost because of it this does not mean they are still not an amazing team. Metro needs to be consistent and show up every night but they are still the best team in the RMAC with a great chance to go very deep in the tournament no one should lose sight of that fact.

- Western State showed you the blue print for how to beat this team even if they fell short as Metro got the 73-67 victory. They attacked with four out and forced their way into the lane. They had a shooter in Trujillo get hot from behind the arc. Lastly, they forced turnovers (15 in the first half alone) to keep from having to play in the half court. You can’t beat Metro playing half court basketball.
- The Valencia Sisters can create their own shots. Western State was packing it in on Dow, and daring Kristin and Brandi to be the ones to beat them, well they did exactly that down the stretch. Brandi hitting the huge three to put Metro ahead for good, but Kristin was very aggressive in the way that she attacked the rim. They both had eleven, but down the stretch it was all them to get the victory bad news for future Metro opponents.
- This Metro Bench is the best in the Conference by far. Metro outscored the Western State bench 28-5 led by 13 from Benson and 10 from Kohn. This is important not only because it was a big reason that they were able to get the victory, but because once tournament time rolls around you have to be able to get your starters some rest or else they are going to wear down. Getting Benson back from the outside is huge so continue to look for bench points to be lopsided in favor of the Roadrunners.
Tomorrow at 5:30pm the #4 ranked Lady Roadrunners take on Colorado Mesa check back here for more reaction. As always please leave your reaction below, just how far do you think this team can go?

The polls came out today and the men’s team is ranked No. 3 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches rankings, and the women’s team is No. 4 in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division II Coaches’ Poll. This comes after an undefeated weekend for both teams that saw them defeat Fort Lewis and Adams State. Both teams move up one spot. The Metro State women defeated the #4 Fort Lewis Skyhawks 78-51 at home. The men needed a last second shot from Reggie Evans to get the 52-51 victory over Adams State. This brings up the question how far do you think these teams can go? Let us know in the comment section below!

This was an amazing weekend where Metro went 2-0 vs Fort Lewis and Adams State a few things that I learned watching the games.
1. To beat Metro State you are going to have to get Morse into foul trouble. Â Morse had 13 rebounds against Matt Morris the leading rebounder in the RMAC coming in. Â Than against Adams State Morse had 15 rebounds a career high. Â The only loss for Metro State has came with Morse had three fouls in the first half. Â He makes everything go for this team when he is playing well they are almost impossible to beat
2. Metro has learned how to deal with adversity
Against Mines when they got down they did not deal with it well. Â They played a lot of 1 on 1 basketball and stopped executing. Â Here against Adams State they were down 7 at the half were down 4 late in the 2nd half. Â They kept executing and just stepped up their defensive intensity to get the win. Â Everyone knew that this team could play great when things were going well, this weekend we learned they can play amazing when the game is tough.
3. Adams State is the second best team in the RMAC
I have seen Metro State play Colorado Mines on the road and Metro play Adams State at home, and I can tell you Adams State is the most dangerous team that Metro has seen this season. Â They are athletic at all positions and can really force you to play at their pace. Â Now I think that we may see these two teams rematch for the RMAC tournament title.

January 22nd, 2012
Hey want to give you guys a few quick thoughts on the huge weekend that the Metro State Women just had.
1. Pressing Metro State is not going to work
-Metro can throw over the top of a zone press with Caley Dow and the Valencia Sisters. Â A man to man press they can just clear out and let Cervantes bring the ball up one on one. Â #4 Fort Lewis found this out the hard way in their 78-51 loss to the Roadrunners
2. To beat Metro you cannot play in the half court
-Metro held Fort Lewis to 25% shooting and Adams State to 32% with their stifling half court D. Â They are only going to get more comfortable with the triangle offense they are already learning how to really pound it inside and forcing teams into a bad situation in terms of having to double Dow inside freeing up the perimeter. Â You have to score early to be able to beat this team.
3. This team is a National Championship
-When you beat the #4 team in the nation by almost thirty you officially announce that you are a team to be reckoned with. Â This team right now bullies teams on the boards and on the defensive end two things that almost always result in victory.

By Daniel Laverty
The Metro men’s soccer team beat No.23 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers 3-0 Oct 21 in Golden. It was the second time these two teams matched up this season, with the Roadrunners beating the Orediggers in a 2-1 overtime thriller Sept.25 at Auraria Field.
Even with the cold temperature, the atmosphere was lively in Golden. With Mines and Metro’s volleyball teams playing against each other at the same time on the same campus, the game seemed more intense than just a regular match up between these to RMAC rivals.
Metro enjoyed goals from Scott Grode, Andrew Mejia and T.J. Thiebaut. Grode’s goal was his 14th of the season.
Metro either matches up extremely well with Mines, or the Roadrunners just show up to play their best soccer against the Orediggers.
These teams flat-out do not like each other. Though both teams play hard and with proper etiquette, there is a lot of pushing, shoving and yelling. And it’s not just on the field, in both games, the Oredigger’s bench has received a yellow card for constant criticism of officiating.
Until this season, Mines had recently dominated the rivalry. That’s not the case these days. In both match-ups, Metro’s defense completely eliminated Mines’ star-forward Tesho Akindele. It’s almost as if Akindele, who’s second in the RMAC in goals and assists, wasn’t even playing.
When Metro lost two time RMAC Player of the Year Steven Emory to graduation, many thought that the team would be irrelevant in the RMAC. Apparently, no one told this to head coach Ken Parsons and his team.
This team is scary. Metro boasts the RMAC’s leading goal scorer in Grode, can get goals from multiple players in different situations and has incredible depth at the goalkeeper position.
What’s been most impressive about this team is the play in the backfield. Metro’s defense, led by Dele Johnson, drives teams crazy. Their ability to shut down the offensive hopes of opponents is a pleasure to watch. Remember Akindele? The Roadrunner defense has held him to only two shots on goal in their two match-ups.
So what will this dominant regular season bring Metro? Just a decent seeding in the RMAC tournament. That’s when the real season begins, and regular season successes are soon forgotten.
After the men’s 3-0 shutout win, Metro’s volleyball team pulled off an incredible, down two-sets, victory against the Lady Orediggers. For a cold night in October, all was well for Roadrunner Nation.
