To preface this movie review, I went into this movie very skeptical for several reasons. Chiefly, that I was worried about the acting abilities of John Cusack who plays the legendary, Edgar Allen Poe, in the movie. There has never been a movie where he completely impressed me with his acting abilities, despite him being in big budget movies such as “2012.” The main worry is his bread and butter seems to be in romantic flicks, point in fact, “Must Love Dogs” “Serendipity” and a few others. Another worry of mine that I had when I went to see this movie was the originality of it all. The trailer makes it appear like every other cat and mouse movie there is, (Red Dragon, Se7en, From Hell) Not only that, but a lot of ideas that originated with Edgar Allen Poe, mainly how people die, has been used countless times in other thrillers and suspense movies, (Point in fact, the Pit and the Pendulum in the “Saw” Series). So how does one make these deaths original, yet still true to the stories.
To give a brief synopsis of the movie, it involves the real life writer and storyteller Edgar Allen Poe, in his hometown of Baltimore, and his experiences in his fictional last days. During these fictional last days of the life of Edgar Allen Poe, he is romantically involved with “Emily Hamilton. (Played by Alice Eve, “She’s Out of My League) A romance that has been forbidden by Emily’s father and therefore must be a secret romance known only by a few. It is now than that a series of mysterious murders begin to occur, in which the lead detective of the film is Detective Fields, played by Luke Evans, (Immortals) who realizes that these murders were done in the precise manner as the stories of Poe. Detective Fields, than recruits Poe in an effort to get inside the killers mind and help apprehend him. Poe, originally is very reluctant to help with the investigation, but when his beloved Emily is captured and used as a device to force Poe to play the Killer’s game, Poe has no choice but to partake in the adventure.
The main thing I wish to focus on is the portrayal of Edgar Allen Poe, by John Cusack. As stated before, I was worried about whether or not Cusack would do justice to Poe. to my astonishment, Cusack not only did him justice but was spot on with what one would imagine Poe’s mannerisms to be. One scene in particular was in a bar and Poe was reciting lines from various poems and stories of his and challenges everyone to finish certain lines, with the prize for successfully doing so a free beer. When no one bothers to answer Poe starts ridiculing them for their stupidity using a sling of intricate and well articulated insults. (no small feat for using the language of the times, and the lines it was written) Another aspect was that it did a great job of doing fan service those who have read or know Poe’s life story, with references in the movie to his life in the military, and other such aspects. But most importantly, is that it didn’t show Poe as a Crack-Cocaine addict,(which was never true) as many films mistakenly portray him as. The only real argument I have against this movie is that they never truly reveal the background of the murderer, that is to say, they never give a reason as to why he commits the murders in the first place. The only thing that is clear is that the murderer is clearly inspired by Poe’s stories. Not only that but the murders themselves have no special meaning, it is only a simple way of creating plot devices to advocate the films events. Despite the good acting of Mr. Cusack, I would only give this movie a 2.5 out of 5 stars and is only worth seeing if you enjoyed the stories of Poe, as well as suspense/thriller enthusiasts. Overall, a stay away film.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits the latest animated feature from director Peter Lord of the Wallace and Gromit franchise, is back with star power this time. Hugh Grant voices the Pirate Captain, Salma Hayek voices Cutlass Liz, and Jeremy Piven is Black Bellamy.
Big name actors have started to be more excited about the animated medium thus leading to better and better movies. It used to be enough for an animated movie to just be good enough for the kids to enjoy. That is no longer the case with movies like Hugo, Adventures of Tin Tin, and Wall-e getting Oscar love in the Best Picture category. Now you just have to be a solid film for everyone to keep people satisfied.
I am happy to report that Pirates is a solid film for everyone. It revolves around a misfit crew lead by the Pirate Captain trying to win the Pirate of the Year award. The Captain has to try to beat out the vicious Cutlass Liz and the silver tongued Black Bellamy for the award all while trying to avoid the pirate hating Queen Victoria. The Pirate Captain seems hopeless until he happens across Charles Darwin who informs him that the crew’s supposed parrot is actually the last remaining Dodo in the world.
The movie is consistently funny with a Darwin character who is madly in love with Queen Victoria as well as a coward. A joke like this is clearly intended only for adults who can appreciate treating the father of evolution with such disrespect. The movie is paced well at just under 90 minutes it never feels too slow. There are so many little jokes the credits serve as a callback for some that you may have missed.
This film may not have as much social awareness as a Wall-e, but it is still a fun movie for families as well as a date night. I give it a solid 3 out of 4 stars and recommend it highly.

Kyle Poland and Nick Rask took the bullet for you the Public to see whether the new Nicholas Sparks movie The Lucky One is worth your ten dollars. The answer is no. It is predictable and boring, and we are not sure Sparks is even trying anymore. Below is the chain of emails that they sent back and forth after seeing the film:
Kyle: Nick can we both agree that Nicholas Sparks is officially the new John Grisham? He writes tons of mediocre stories in the same basic style as his last big hit The Notebook. This movie it really appears like the entire story is in cruise control. I understand it is tough to keep working hard once you are rich, but does he have to make it so obvious that he doesn’t care anymore? This movie is a huge middle finger to anyone actually trying to write something original and creative that they care about.
Nick: Kyle, I honestly think that Nicholas Sparks is a sado-masochist….and I say this because all of his books get turned into movies in which teenage girls force their boyfriends to go see. In doing they are subjecting their so called “loved one” an inornate amount of pain having to go through these horrible love stories. My brain still hurts from how predictable it all was.
Zac: So I don’t think I am going to do this movie I mean I only say three words the entire film.
Agent: No man women love the strong and silent type.
Zac: Well I did do High School Musical
(They break into song and dance skipping away holding hands)
Really though, it is such a tough thing for him to try to move into adult roles and so I understand his desperation for this role, but he messed up. For the record I am a believer in Efron I think he has star power, but we will have to wait to see what he can do he never gets a chance in this film.
Nick: This movie had more musical instrumental video montages that i though that Zac Efron was going to burst into one of his “High School Musical” songs! I mean come on now there was what, at least 3 five minute video montages? Have you lost all imagination with creating a love story Mr. Sparks?
Kyle: This movie really plays into all of the sad love story clichés where at first the girl hates the guy and is a total jerk to him before falling hard. In what sort of sad world would the guy stick around to be treated terribly? This reminds me of a song Nick …
Nick: Kyle I think that is Nicholas’ Sparks formula almost. Lets back at his other movies “Oh you have to promise me you won’t fall in love with me” or “I wont let go (guy hanging on a ferris wheel) until you say yes to dating me!” I mean come on now? If it was that easy to do something that stupid or say something that cheesy, I feel like everyone would be married!

Here at KMET Radio we know that college students don’t have money to just throw away on a bad movie. So we have assigned the guys from Movie Hash to come up with the top five movies for you to see this weekend. Happy movie watching!
1. Cabin In the Woods: That is right Cabin in the Woods is the best movie out there. Director Drew Goddard has created a funny and fun film that examines why we enjoy horror films so much. All we can say is that five teenagers go to a cabin and some stuff goes down. It is not for everyone… only cool people. Go see it!
2. 21 Jump Street: This is a great comedy from Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum rebooting the old TV show with an irreverent twisted sense of humor. Hill and Tatum play two cops sent into a high school undercover to stop a drug ring. This is an easy film to watch and enjoy on a date night or out with friends!
3. American Reunion: The gang is all back for this final (they claim) installment of the American Pie franchise. Jim, Michelle, and yes Stiffler are all back to attend their 13 year high school reunion. The premise of struggling to grow up and reconcile still being an adult with trying to still be “fun” is not the most original but it works here and you will remember why you liked the first American Pie to begin with.
4. Hunger Games: Look if you haven’t seen this yet… congrats to all ten of you. This film is based on the smash hit book and has stormed into theaters already earning over $300 million. It is set in the future where 12 districts each have to offer one boy and one girl to the great evil Capitol to participate in the Hunger Games. Which is a nice way of saying all the kids have to kill each other until there is one “winner”. (When children are murdered who wins really?) This movie is not as good as the book but gives a solid effort in trying to live up to the hype.
5. Wrath of the Titans: A movie that is not making huge money, but if you like Greek mythology is a solid flick full of awesome action. Worth seeing just to see Kronos the father of all the gods. This is the sequel to Clash of the Titans which continues the story with evil Hades trying to release Kronos to end the world. Never fear movie goers Perseus is there to free Zeus and to try to save the earth.

Chris Hemsworth as Curt
So to give a very simple and a very basic synopsis of the movie, five friends decide to go to one of their cousin’s cabin, that’s surrounded by gorgeous woods and a beautiful, sparkling lake. After discovering a secret cellar downstairs they unleash a terrible evil that goes beyond any of their understanding. The acting in the film is perfect as Chris Hemsworth who most people know as Thor does a great turn as Curt the overconfident jock. The true character who steals the show is the stoner Marty played by Fran Kranz who introduces the world to the idea of coffee mug bong. (Do I need to say anything else?)
Once again as I said earlier, THIS IS NOW WHAT YOU EXPECT! This movie goes far beyond the typical slasher movie genre. There is not one thing I didn’t like about this movie. It had a good storyline to it, with an added bonus of a throwback to the early zombie movie days. Not only that, but there is more comedy elements in this movie than there is scare factor. Though I will say it right now, this is not a spoof or a comedy like “Zombieland” I would willingly spend another 10 bucks to go see this movie again and give it a full confidence of a 4 out of 4 stars. this truly is as the director Drew Goddard has said “A love letter to the horror genre” so for everyone, but especiallly those horror movie fans, this is a must see!

Loki and Tony Stark are facing off in a battle of words in the latest exclusive clip that has been sweeping the internet from mtv.com. Now lets take a look at the clip and see if we can gain anything useful before the movie is released May 4th.
:04 After Loki asks what he has to fear Stark responds in his perfect flippant tone “The Avengers.” He says all of this while pouring himself a drink… awesome.
:24 Here we see Stark continuing with his quips while putting on a bracelet (my bet is a tracking bracelet.) This easy banter by the protagonist has long been a staple in Joss Whedon’s work since Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This means even if the movie completely sucks (which initial reports say it doesn’t, you can count on laughing during the film thanks to Whedon.
:44 Here the best line of the clip, “We have a Hulk.” This should way lay some of the fears that fans of the comic books have about the movie. In four words the direction of the film is really given away (not in a bad way). We now know that Whedon is going to stay true to the comics and make the Hulk king of all the bad asses. We here at KMET Radio are pretty pumped for some Hulk smash!
1:02 Here is a confusing part of the scene that actually makes no sense to me. Stark admits that maybe the army will be too much for them, but than says that they will make damn sure that they will avenge the earth anyway. If the army is too much for them doesn’t that imply that they are going to die? How can you avenge from beyond the grave? Is he saying that they will kill Loki despite dying? I think that is what he is trying to say, but if they can’t beat the army how would they kill Loki? The end of the teaser clip leaves me confused, but I am still excited for May 4th to roll around.
Here is a link to watch the trailer for yourself

American Pie is charging back into theaters one more time with raunchy jokes aplenty. The entire original cast has returned and upon entering the film if you are college aged you can’t help but be hit with a bit of nostalgia. I remember the first American Pie being the first movie I saw that felt was saying stuff that kids thought but no one was saying. That is the main thing that directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg had to find that other American Pies had lost. They were looking for the sense of realism to make it feel like crazy things were happening to actual people. When talking to Thomas Ian Nicholas he talked about how the directors talked about putting the heart back into the films. American Reunion goes looking for a heart and finds it making for an enjoyable comedy.
The movie premise is not a new one in the fact that it introduces characters older feeling like their “prime” days are over. Jim and Michelle (Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan) are still married but have a child and are struggling to keep the spark going in their relationship. Oz (Chris Klein) has fame but it not for the reasons he would like after appearing on a celebrity dance show. He has a model girlfriend but is still unhappy and looking for something more. The immortal Stifler is back and being bullied by his boss in a 9 to 5 job that he hates. The movie deals with the idea of trying to transition from who you were when you were young to being an adult while still holding on to some of the fun. While the idea is not original the execution is fun and heartfelt making this a supremely watchable film.
The biggest strength of the film is that it doesn’t feel like it is trying to compete with this new batch of raunchy comedies such as The Hangover or Superbad. It is comfortable being itself and it feels like the situations are just happening rather than being forced upon you. For example, an underrated scene where Oz is forced to watch his dance performance and subsequent speech is one of the funniest scenes that happens organically and feels real (I bet once or twice the Situation has had to watch his exploits with someone he would rather not have).
While American Reunion does not take you to original ground, it treads familiar ground with enough care that you enjoy the ride. I give it 3 out of 4 stars and recommend it to anyone looking for a good laugh.

When I first sat down to see this movie there were several things that were tugging at my mind as to whether or not this was going to be a good movie. First, the simple fact that when they did the remake of “Clash of the Titans” I was pretty disappointed despite its all-star cast. Another aspect was that since “300” came out in 2006 and became a screaming success there has been a resurgence of Greek mythology based movies coming out of Hollywood. (The first resurgence being in the 40’s up until the 70’s… even the trends are recycled.) Especially after the mediocre Greek Mythology based movie “Immortals,” sitting down to see this movie I was skeptical and had a low expectations for the movie.
The movie begins shortly after where the first one left off in which Perseus now has a son, and Hades (who was one of the main antagonists in the remake of “Clash of the Titans”) has been banished by Zeus, makes a deal with “Kronos,” who was the father of all the main gods before they came into power. In Greek mythology there was an uprising by the offspring of Kronos (Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon) in which they conquered their father and imprisoned him. The deal contains that if all the gods gave up their divine power and transferred it to Kronos, they would retain their immortality. Zeus is than tricked and captured by Hades and now it is up to Perseus and a few of his friends to stop the end of the world from happening.
Firstly, let’s look at the graphics that was used in this movie, I must say astonishing and awestruck and how much CGI was put into it, bringing all these Greek mythological creatures to life on the big screen, as well as their portrayal of Kronos. I also enjoyed the storyline which held themes that everyone can relate to, brotherly rivalry, and reconciliation. On top of that, the movie was well paced moving along events and keeping up with the action sequences. Like the remake it had its original all-star cast of Liam Neeson, playing the all-powerful Zeus, Ralph Fiennes, (best known as playing Lord Voldemort, in the Harry Potter series) The up and coming star from Avatar, Sam Worthington playing the half god, half man Perseus, with a special Guest appearance from Bill Nighy. (From the Underworld and Pirates of the Caribbean series) So like the remake this has a star studded cast. Another aspect that they did differently than Clash of the Titans was they added in humor making the movie more than purelyu ad advertisement for Blu Ray players.. All in all, I enjoyed this movie greatly and would give it a 3 out of 4 stars and definitely worth your 10 bucks!

Editors Note: This is the second review from Movie Hash about Hunger Games. The first was done by Kyle Poland and takes a more negative view on the film so without any further ado here is Nick Rask’s review of Hunger Games. Enjoy and let us know what you thought of the film below!
When I sat down in the darkened movie theater I was greatly worried…worried because movie companies always end up butchering great ideas from the books and make them their own. Which ends up being something totally different and just horrible. But I can safely say that even though they did alter a decent amount of personality traits, I was still deeply satisfied with the film.
Let’s start with the casting, which was perfectly done. You have Woody Harrleson playing a drunk and cynical Haymitch, which is a perfect role for him. Jennifer Lawrence, who is now an up and coming star after “X Men: First Class” and plays the role of the strong heroine to perfection. Josh Hutcherson who usually does kid oriented movies (Zathura) plays Peeta, the now not so secret admirer of Katniss. Than you have Elizabeth Banks who plays the oblivious Effie, (once again a new genre for her as she is used to doing comedies.) So right away you do have a cast that was perfect for this movie. However, some of their portrayals do rub viewers the wrong way, but I think it’s safe to say that is more an issue with the director’s direction than there acting abilities. The main one being the portrayal of Haymitch, who is completely drunk during most of the book, but is rarely seen like that in the movie. On top of that his interaction with Katniss is a big issue, that the movie shows him warming up to Katniss almost immediately, THIS NEVER HAPPENS!. But once again it is what it is.

Now let’s move onto the visual effects and the Capital itself. After reading the book you have to wonder, how is this going to be portrayed in the movie? The tribute parade, the costumes, hairstyles etc. The movie does an excellent job of showing the grotese side of this not-so-utopian world in all of these regards. You have people with outrageously crazy hairstyles, a lot of them dyed or bleached to unnatural colors. There is also a mix of shiny costumes that are just so out there and in you’re face, which goes well with this “dystopian” like story.
Another aspect is in regards to the level of violence one can suspect. This is a very morbid story, whose demographics are middle to high schoolers. So its definitely something to consider when getting a PG-13 rating instead of a very more violent “R.” you really don’t see any gruesome deaths as it happens off screen. ( SPOILTER ALERT, like Rue getting speared) for such a morbid storyline they did an amazing job with keeping it towards there demographics, with the very helpful aid of shaky camera work.
One more addition that was a nice touch is that it gives us another point of view than the book. The book is strictly a first person viewpoint, while the movie does give us a behind the scenes look at what’s going on behind the games, and the politics. You see Haymitch attempting to get sponsors and convince the gamemakers to change the rules. Something you never see in the book but is still possible since we only know whats going on with Katniss.
However, this movie is not without faults, mainly that it didn’t portray the relationships of the characters well with each other, I.E. Haymitch and Katniss. On top of that, it could have been ten minutes longer and would have been better for it. Other than that, I thoroughly loved this movie and would give it a 3 out of 4 stars. Other issues which are significant is that includes scenes that are in the book, such as District 11 rioting after the death of Rue. once again something that never happens in the book. another aspect was they don’t explain the importance of the “Mockingjay” Pin other than that it is a token given to Katniss by her sister, Primrose. The Mockingjay itself is a very important and intricate part of the Hunger Games series. Once again I did come out of the movie theater pretty satisfied and looking forward to the upcoming theatrical release of “Catching Fire”

This is the first of two reviews for Hunger Games my partner in crime on Movie Hash, Nick Rask, will be writing a far more positive review later on we both saw the movie together and came out with very different opinions. There are some spoilers below so DON’T READ ON IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET! Once you have seen the film let us know which one of us you agree with in the comment section below. Without any further ado my thoughts on Hunger Games:
Let me start my review by saying that I didn’t hate Hunger Games. So any negativity that I spout within the review keep in mind that I would give this movie two out of four stars. I feel like they had the skeleton of a good movie and than just couldn’t cash in to make this movie what it should have been. When it comes to this movie I have three major complaints but before I get to that lets talk about the positives in the film. First up is the performance of Jennifer Lawrence she did a great job at capturing the balance of being scared yet still being the tough girl who hunts to keep her family alive as Katniss Everdeen. Second, I thought that they nailed the look of the people from the Capitol. Elizabeth Banks plays the chaperone of the tributes from district 12 as Elfie Trinket is unrecognizable and does a great job of stealing a few scenes while not having a major character. The last major positive is that for all of you who like me were worried about how a PG-13 movie was going to show the horrors of the Games do not fear I am fairly sure a bribe was given (I kid… maybe), but they managed to stay fairly true to the violence portrayed in the book against all the tributes.
Now time for the negatives that killed this movie for me. First up is the way that they rush through the beginning of the book to get into the Games. They leave out entirely major parts such as the fact that Katniss and Peeta as part of their strategy do all of training together and as a reader you are unsure if their alliance will stand up in the arena. They also rush through Katniss being prepared for the entrance of the champions, which in turn cheapens the character of her head stylist Cinna played (poorly) by Lenny Kravitz. Cinna was a major character in the books earning Katniss’ trust but all of this is rushed through making their relationship feel fake. Lastly, they don’t show Katniss being coached for her pre-games interview. This one is a bit more personal as I loved that moment in the book between Haymitch and Katniss which they could have done in a quick two minute montage, who doesn’t have two minutes for a montage? Speaking of Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) the mentor to district 12 having won a Hunger Games himself as a child, his character gets butchered. As they often do in movies they decided it was too hard to have a character who does the right thing, but in an insensitive and often rude sort of way. So they decide to just make Haymitch nice, really nice. He is mean and drunk for one scene than Peeta talks to him off camera and magically he is nice and full of sunshine all the time. This is not even close to the Haymitch from the novel and quite honestly makes him a fairly flat character.
Another major problem with the film is that almost half of the novel is the thoughts of Katniss. It was what made the book as good as you felt like you knew Katniss completely by the end of the book. I expected the movie to have some sort of internal monologue to honor about half of the book. I was sorely disappointed as they cut about half of the book by never giving you an insight into the mind of Katniss directly instead electing to have Caesar Flickerman the TV host of the Games be your guide to the new world being introduced. Does this make any sense to anyone? Hollywood needs someone like me to just be a common sense advisor to every film.
“Alright so what we want to do is take out the soul of the book and put it in the hands of someone you never really are going to care about. This is a good idea right, right? Kyle why are you banging your head into the table?”
My final complaint is that while rushing throughout the movie to go from one action scene to another they insert scenes that never happened or were even eluded to in the novel. President Snow plays almost no role within the book but in the movie they have multiple scenes of him with Seneca Crane (the head designer of the arena) talking about how he didn’t want Katniss to win. This never ever happens in the book so for me it is inexcusable to rush through a story only to add in little parts that don’t help the story at all.
Watching the Hunger Games I felt rushed as if they just wanted to get me through the movie and out of the theatre as quickly as possible. Someone needs to tell Hollywood that teens will sit through a long movie based on one of their favorite books, just look at the success and praise heaped upon Lord of the Rings. For that reason I would have to say that this movie is one that I would not watch again and would not recommend seeing in theaters.

21 Jump Street is like flipping through a high school yearbook, you already know all the parts of the story, but that doesn’t stop you from enjoying the trip down memory lane.
Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller bring you a buddy cop film where two loser cops band together to take down the bad guys. Officer Schmidt and Officer Jenko, played by Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum respectively are two cops who went to high school together where of course Jenko was the popular athletic one and Schmidt was the geeky unpopular one. This trend continues in the police academy where they become fast friends so that Jenko can help Schmidt with fitness and Schmidt can help Jenko with the written tests they have to take. After they blow an arrest in a hilarious scene where Jenko forgets to read a biker his Miranda Rights they are sent undercover as high schoolers to stop a synthetic drug ring. Their new division 21 Jump Street is lead by Ice Cube who does a hilarious skewing of the angry black police captain.
The movie is purely there to make you laugh as it focuses more on the humor and less on the action. I think this was a smart decision with Jonah HIll in the cast as the movie keeps you laughing with several outrageous scenes including my favorite where they attempt to throw up the drugs that they were forced to ingest to prove they weren’t cops. The R-rating also separates the film from other buddy cop comedies allowing jokes in that would otherwise be completely off limits. This allows a fresh spin to be put onto otherwise boring “cop humor”.
This movie is a must see for anyone under the age of 25 as I would give it 4 out of 5 stars in the first good comedy in quite a while. So just sit back and enjoy the trip down memory lane with a few fresh twists along the way.

Kyle Poland and Nick Rask of Movie Hash went to see a screening of Silent House. What follows are their actual thoughts about the film as they emailed back and forth about the film.
Nick: Kyle…. Am I the only one that got this feeling of being in a haunted house? Because anyone who’s been to a haunted house more than a few times knows some of the golden rules of what the people in their blood stained costumes can and cannot do.
The prime one being “no physical contact with people unless a waiver is signed” During the movie the main antagonist always comes close to catching Sarah, the main girl in the movie but never really getting her, almost bordering on comic mischief, much like the workers at a haunted house, they will come as close as they can to touch you without touching you.
Another reason why it felt like a haunted house, you were always led to different rooms where a different part of the story would be told in a very implied manner, much like a haunted house does as well with sound effects of terrible torture that you can’t completely see. It’s almost like they commissioned someone who builds haunted houses and writes horrible fan faction to do this movie.

Kyle: The haunted house feel in the movie is what ruined it all for me. In a good horror film or really any film at all, you want your main antagonist to feel like they are at risk either emotionally or physically. I never once felt as if Sarah, played by Elizbeth Olsen, was in any real danger at all. The fact that the film was one continuous shot should have made the audience more on the edge of their seat throughout instead I spent most of the film trying to figure out the supposed “twist” since obviously nothing was really coming to get her. I can’t say I was ever scared during the film which is not a good sign for a horror film. I wanted to like this film for trying something new with the one continuous shot, an idea I think can really work within that genre, but Directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau blew it on this one making me wonder if we will ever see a movie like this attempted again.
Nick: Why in the name of God has she not gotten a weapon until the third act of the movie! I mean come on now, you have realized you’re trapped in the house, you have had enough common sense to run away from the person chasing you, so why wouldn’t you grab any weapon you could find more towards the beginning?
Kyle: If this movie didn’t suck than yes, yes you would. There is some faceless monster of a man chasing you who is apparently strong enough to drag grown men around, but why make getting a weapon a priority? This film was so bad at the screening that we attended you could hear the sighs from the audience as the film went on longer. I have nothing good to say about this film it is awful avoid it at all costs Nick and I gave it 1 out of 5 stars.

To preface this movie review, as I always do with any review I write, I was skeptical about going to see yet another Dr. Seuss movie. After the fiasco of the live action Mike Myers “Cat in the Hat” who wouldn’t be skeptical? (Why Mike Myers WHY?????) On top of that I could not get into the animated “Horton Hears a Who” with Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell. The last Dr. Seuss film I enjoyed was “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” (which was made in 2000… not a good sign). Of course you can’t foget when reviewing this movie that the target audience is not the college aged male instead it is a movie for the kids.
This movie follows the original Dr. Seuss book pretty closely with a few exceptions, since no matter how hard you slice it and try to stick to it, you will have to make a few concessions. The story begins as with many love stories, a boy named “Ted”, (Played by the now not-so-boyish Zac Efron) who wants to impress his sweetheart “Audrey.” (Played by Pop-Country star Taylor Swift)

Any excuse for a Taylor Swift photo Movie Hash supports
The story starts with Audrey’s wanting to see a real live tree, which gives Ted an opportunity to figure out what happened to the trees. (Guy trying to impress the girl and all that good jazz.) This is especially important since everyone lives in a town called “Thneedville” that has no real trees anywhere, in fact it’s a heavily deforested area (Cue environmentalist parent applauding in the audience). Ted now must go win his lady’s heart, so he goes to the only person/thing that knows what happened, a being known as the “Once-ler” (don’t ask me what a Once-ler is… I don’t know). The Once-ler than tells his story, and ultimately gives Ted the chance to nurture the very last “Truffalla” tree seed. This story however, is not without any antagonists. The main one being “Mr. O’hare” who owns a factory that produces air. After finding out that Ted is snooping around looking for trees’ (which of course produces air….for free) O’Hare sees Ted as a threat and intimidates and ultimately a pursuit occurs with both Ted and O’Hare chasing down the road trying to get the Truffalla Seed that “ran away.
All in all, I was indifferent with this movie, I didn’t dislike or really like this movie. I will say that this movie did have some good comedy. The animation was well done, and I enjoyed the narration brought by the Once-Ler. I would give it 2.5 out of 5 stars. If you are looking for a movie to see with young kids though you could do worse.

The first thought that was in my mind as well as everyone else that purchased their ticket to go and see this movie was, “How is it going to compare to ‘Superbad?’” How is it going to compete with the all star comedic cast like Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Bill Hader, and newcomer Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin enough said), all for the most part, well known and comedic actors. With Project X, you have an almost completely unknown set of actors. The most notable being Thomas Mann, who plays the main character in the film. The only other notable project he’s been in was “It’s Kind of a Funny Story.” (Which is a great “dramedy”). The only worry I had when I sat down to see this movie was in regards to how it was filmed. It’s filmed with a handheld camera, much like in the movie “Cloverfield” (which had the biggest complaints of nausea and headaches.) It ended up working out just fine as the handheld camera added to the chaotic feeling of the film without inducing any vomit.

The movie does not focus so much as on plot as just letting the story and events unfold before the eyes of it’s audience. The main storyline is that it is Thomas’s (Played by Thomas Mann) birthday, and his parents happen to go away for the weekend. (We already know where this is heading and we like it) so needless to say he plans a small get together party at his house that he entrusts to the planning and execution to his two friends, “Costa,” and “J.B.”with Costa acting as ringleader. Despite Thomas’s objections to having a small scale party (50 people max) Costa utilizes several mainstream media sources, via texting, Facebook, Craigslist, to mass market this party without telling his friends. Needless to say, once the party started, it certainly didn’t stop. Eventually, the police come in and then the whole party becomes a total disaster (or success depending or your viewpoint).
At the end of the movie my friend and I just looked at each other in wonderment, we both felt as if we were part of the partying experience that was been shown in the movie. I was just so astounded at the events that were been partaken in the movie, that I didn’t have words. The only thing I had to say was that movie blew my mind. It goes without saying that this movie is the epitome of escapism entertainment where you really don’t have to worry about storyline. I loved the editing, and the humor, and I strongly recommend this movie, especially if you’re looking for an escape from reality. I advise anyone that is between the ages of 17-25 to go and see this movie, it’s $10 well spent.

The first thing that I want to say about going in to see this movie was that my expectations and hope were high for the main reason that this movie was about the modern day issue of terrorism. Something that is the main focus in the Call of Duty video game series:Modern Warfare. (A video game series that I am a huge fan of, having virtually stopped the collapse of civilization many a time.) So once I made that connection it was hard to separate the two. Therefore, I was extremely excited seeing this movie since the Call of Duty franchise might have inspired this film, and that it’s main selling point was the use of active duty Navy SEAL’s, meaning that the realism would be amazing, something that Michael Bay knows nothing about excepts. But I digress. (But really Michael Bay sucks, okay really moving on now I promise.)

To begin with directors Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh start the movie off action packed, and then gives you the time to get to know the main characters in the story along with some background on each of them. The story focuses on a group of Navy SEAL’s who retrieve a CIA agent who infiltrated a terrorist organization. After this operation they realize that there is a lot more to whats going on than is being shown. It is soon discovered that there is a terrorist plot to send suicide bombers to American soil and set off a media frenzy.
Let’s begin with the amount of action in this movie, is so realistic and compelling. The storytelling and editing was well done. There were several scenes in the movie that did pay homage to first person shooters, with a decent amount of first person scenes and viewpoints. After seeing a variety of war films I would now rate this as part of my top three next to “Black Hawk Down” and “Saving Private Ryan.” One point to mention is that in some ways this could be considered a publicity stunt by the armed forces to gain some good publicity, because let’s be honest over the past few years and the discovery of inhumane treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghrabe, they need every little bit of positive publicity. All in all, as a Call of Duty fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and would give it 4 out of 5 stars and it is definitely worth your 10 bucks. God bless America and Michael Bay still sucks.

I must say this, when I sat down to see John Carter I was already biased. I’m a huge fan of the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs, who also wrote the Tarzan series. After seeing how Disney handled the Tarzan movie, and completely annihilated the movie, I was very skeptical about how this movie would be handled. Luckily, my reading adventures have not taking me to the John Carter series, and therefore, allowed me to be ignorant of whether or not the movie has stayed true to the books.

To give a quick synopsis of the movie follows the story of the title character, John Carter, who is a former cavalry Captain fighting for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Playing John Carter is Taylor Kitsch who is most well known for his time playing the brooding running back on Friday Night Lights John Riggins. In this movie Kitsch gets to do what he does best, be brooding. A good job of casting from director Andrew Stanton on picking his leading man, but moving right along! After being chased into a cave by an angry band of Apaches he is magically transported onto Mars. When he arrives on Mars he encounters a race of green humanoids known as “Tharks,” A race that seems to lead a similar lifestyle to nomadic and warlike Native Americans. After being taken captive and later escaping he gets immersed in yet another Civil War between two warring kingdoms. Initially he wants no part, however, that does change when he falls in love with Dejah Thoris, a Princess of Helium who is played by Lynn Collins. (A woman worth fighting a war over.) After that he becomes very active, siding with the kingdom of Helium (as he should).
As I’ve said before, I have never read any of the “Mars,” or “Barsoom” novels. I did however, read a lot of other works written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, among these the Tarzan Series and “The Land that Time Forgot.” And I was completely satisfied that Disney mirrored the storytelling of the movie with that of Edgar Rice Burroughs. His main style has been of creating devices that would create action driven sequences, and once that conflict is resolved, finds other scenarios to create action filled scenes. This is exactly how Disney approached this movie and left me satisfied with the action scenes. Another point of satisfaction comes from the graphics especially in regards to the creatures. After reading countless Tarzan stories, each with a variety of unique races and creatures, it was very enjoyable to see those descriptions of races and animals being portrayed on screen. All in all I would give this movie a 3 out of 5 stars and was a nice escape from the real world. I strongly recommend this movie to everyone who is a science fiction fan, as well as the common audience.

When you look at the new Amanda Seyfried thriller Gone, you have to say it is consistent. It is consistently boring.
The film directed by Heitor Dhalia follows the story of Jill (Seyfried) as she tries to save her sister after she disappears. Jill believes the culprit to be a serial killer who kidnapped her years earlier before she escaped. With that being the set up the film traps itself to either be ridiculous or boring. The premise is so outrageous just telling people the plot draws some eye rolling to start the film. Dhalia tries to use that to the films advantage to play on the audience expecting the outrageous and instead provides the expected.
To the credit of the film it tries to stay very realistic, but it does this in a very boring way. Seyfried also proves in the film that she is meant to be a supporting actress not a leading actress. She is just meant to play a nice innocent girl which is never interesting enough to watch for a leading lady. The film feels too straightforward and a little rushed as Seyfried is the only character truly developed. This means that I went through the whole film not really worried about what happened to her sister at all. I certainly did not sympathize with the police officers who do not believe Jill that her sister has been kidnapped.
The film is just poorly written with a premise so bad that there is no way that it can be saved. It than makes matters worse by not accepting what it is as a film. It has to be ridiculous I mean really it is about a girl whose sister is kidnapped by a serial killer who took her earlier. This movie gets a 1 out of 4 stars from me stay away unless you are a glutton for punishment.

Ghost Rider: Spirt of Vengeance Movie Review
To preface this movie review I have to say that I did in fact watch the first Ghost Rider, and really was not that impressed by it, so needless to say when i paid my ten dollars to see this movie I was ready to be disappointed.
The movie starts off some time after the events of the first movie, and ultimately winds up being in Eastern Europe with Johnny Blaze (Nick Cage) trying to run away from his dark side stating that the rider is hungry for souls. While all this is happening a mother with her son is being protected by a secret christian order who knows of a prophecy involving that child and the devil who wants to transfer his body into the child’s making him more powerful. One of the agents of this secret order named Moreau, played Idris Ebrus, appeals to him to save the child since the Order failed to protect them. In exchange the Order would expel the demon that possesses Johnny Blaze that turns him into the Ghost Rider. A deal that he cannot refuse
Firstly, the casting decision is one of my arguments for why this movie franchise has failed, as evidence he fact that this past weekend (Febuary 17-19) Safehouse outsold Ghost Rider 2:Spirit of Vengeance. Nicolas Cage is one actor who should not be playing the character of motorcycle stuntman “Johnny Blaze.” When you see someone who is supposed to play this character, you don’t picture a 40+ year old man, who has a receding hairline. One would picture someone a lot more dashing, along the lines of a 30 year old, with Michael Fassbender playing a dashing/tormented Johnny Blaze.
Not only that, but the simple fact of Nicolas Cage’s “acting” ability as Johnny Blaze. When one sees someone with multiple personalities, I.E. Batman/Bruce Wayne you see this tormented soul who’s trying to reconcile both sides. The perfect example is either Christian Bales performance and Michael Keaton’s performances of Batman and Bruce Wayne comes to mind. Instead you see Nicolas Cage pulling out his insane rants, like he does in every single movie that he is in.
The biggest disappointment I must say, is the work done by David S. Goyer. David S. Goyer has worked as a screenwriter for many other comic book movies that were very successful, to name a few he helped write “Blade 2″ “Batman Begins” “The Dark Knight” and is helping with the new Superman reboot coming up. All of these movies have been superbly written and executed, yet as soon as i saw the end credits with his name my immediate reaction was utter disgust that he was part of the project since he has done such a great job on others.
In short this movie had no real character development, the editing was god awful, and the storyline was just ok, despite having a huge source of storyline inspiration from the comics to draw upon. I would give this movie a 1 1/2 stars and strongly recommend that you don’t waste your $10 to see this movie and only see it when it comes out on Redbox or Netflix, if at all.

Once again Ryan Reynolds is now playing a role in which he is all too familiar with…a rookie agent or character and has something to prove. Denzel Washington, who plays opposite of Reynolds is a rogue agent that has split from the CIA and is captured. To begin with you cannot help but make a comparison between the Bourne Trilogy, that yes it’s another agent movie but its apples and oranges. So bias aside this movie was pretty good. It does take a lot of stereotypes of other recent agent movies like the Bourne series such as government corruption as one of the main points of the film.
To give a quick synopsis of the film Ryan Reynolds plays CIA agent Matt Weston, who’s sole responsibility is monitoring the security of safehouses for the purpose of interrogations as well as keeping targets safe from outside intrusion. Opposite of Reynolds is Denzel Washington plays Tobin Frost, a rogue CIA agent who gets captured and is transported to the same safehouse Weston is maintaining. In the middle of the interrogation, a group of mercenaries attacks and kills everyone but Weston and Frost who end up escaping. From then on it becomes a mental cat and mouse game between Reynolds and Washington with the result that we learn more about Frost’s background and why he went rogue.
All in all this movie was enjoyable to watch. The only drawback to this movie was that it was quite predictable in regards to what was going to happen. However, it still is Denzel Washington, and let’s be honest people, who does not like Denzel Washington? Overall this movie still was nice to see and I would give it 3 out of 4 stars and do recommend it to see only if you don’t have any other high priority movies to see.

There is a quote about war, that it’s “a lot of time waiting, and very little of it being in action.” This is particularly true of survival movies. However, “The Grey” does a great job of combining everyone’s backstory (the “waiting” or “inbetween scenes”). Something that Liam Neeson has always been was typecasted, however even with that in mind, his castes have now evolved from that of the “mentor” or “teacher” figure, (“Batman Begins”, “Kingdom of Heaven” to that of not one to messed with. (“Taken”, “Unknown”)
To give a brief summary of the story, you have a bunch of petroleum workers that are working in the coldest reaches of the world, Alaska, in which the main characters job is to protect the workers from the wolves. (which are HEAVILY demonized) So it’s the end of the work week and they get on a plane to visit home, (never specified but implied) and the plane ends up crashing. After all of the survivors regroup, Liam Neeson’s character becomes the de facto leader and attempts to lead the group out of danger. The biggest threat now is being picked on by a pack of wolves roaming the area. Without giving the end of the story away, it leaves with a brilliant cliffhanger, which I usually detest with all my might. The one in the movie was a very nice one and a solid surprise.
So all in all, a very strong movie to spend your $10 at. Great action sequences, great dialogue between the actors. It truly was a treat to go and sit down at the movie theater and watch this movie. Out of four stars I would give this film 3.5 totally worth checking out!

Hunger Games Super Bowl Trailer Analysis
Here are some thoughts on the newest trailer for Hunger Games which will play during the Super Bowl!
:18 seconds Here we get a look at the Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket and they have done a great job making Elizabeth Banks looks odd and nothing like herself. I think this is a good sign about those worrying about how the adaptation will go from the pages to the big screen.
:26 seconds We get to see the scene of Katniss (Lawrence) volunteering to take the place of her younger sister. Love the militaristic look of the guards here think they really got the look perfect.
:35 seconds Here we see a tearful Katniss saying farewell to one of her love interests Gale. We can only hope that this doesn’t mean that Katniss will be a tearful heroine that will just annoy the audience. (I am looking at you Twilight.)
:50 seconds The tease for Katniss paying tribute to the Third District… after a child is MURDERED. This is something that we still have no idea how this movie is going to handle with a PG-13 rating. Usually any violence against children is an automatic R-rating. Hopefully they have stayed true to the story we will just have to see on March 23rd!
1:00 min Shows Cinna (Kravitz) secretly giving the pin to Katniss to wear. While putting a finger to his lips something all movie trailers love to do for whatever reason. If a character has a secret, naturally you will have to come see it to discover their secret!

My good friend and co-host of Movie Hash, Nick Rask, sat down with me as we finally got around to watching Moneyball and what follows are our thoughts back and forth about the movie. This is by no means a plot synopsis so if you haven’t seen it I would suggest seeing the film than coming back and reading. Without further ado our thoughts on the film…
I came into this movie with high expectations as it was nominated for best picture as well as the fact that it was a sports movie so it couldn’t be all that pretentious. So in the immortal words of Terrell Owens I got my popcorn ready and sat down to watch the film.
Nick: Kyle, I must say that the first thing I noticed about this film was the unintentional humor. Just the attitude of Brad Pitt’s character was amazing with some of his responses, which was not intended to be funny towards the actors, but as a third person party looking in it was hysterical.
Kyle: First thing that I noticed was the fact that they were using actual game footage from the 2001 playoff series between the Yankees and the A’s rather than have actors play out the game. This robbed us of the the chance to watch actors with not an athletic bone in their body run, but definitely gave the movie legitimacy. So have to say big props to Major League Baseball for giving up the rights to their game footage.
Kyle: Nick why the hell is Brad Pitt always eating in his films. Is this one of his criteria for doing a film. First, it was the Ocean’s movies and now Moneyball. I hope he got the twinkle scene in one take otherwise that man has a stomach of steel.
Nick: Lets just be honest yeah Brad Pitt has to have an oral fixation, in Inglorious Bastards he was a snuff addict, he just has to have some kind of prop and than huzzah he is set.
Kyle: This movie should win Best Picture but I know that it won’t, it is simply too happy. Don’t ask me why the Oscars hate happy but they do. If someone doesn’t due or get raped in your movie just forget about a Best Picture Award. I am just waiting for Pitts daughter to die while singing him a farewell tune on her guitar they have to do it if they want the awards!
Nick:Yeah definitely adding this really sweet young girl to be his daughter was a really nice touch especially since you always see Brad Pitt, ruthlessly trading his players. It adds a bit of lovability about the guy. I was waiting for the girl to board the plane and then the plane blowing up, just to make it sadder.
Kyle: A minor complaint about all sports movies. How come in every sports movies they are such an unwanted bunch but than in the end they are magically amazingly talented? No one could see that these guys were great? Basketball movies are the worst offenders; I am looking at you Coach Carter. I want a movie about a team so talented that they are losing their joy for the game because all they do is win and no one can challenge them. Call it Joyless make it happen Hollywood!
Nick: I agree with you any sports movie you do have these teams of misfits that somehow after two or three games they just become amazing and almost unbeatable, but with this you don’t see the changes being made until a little more than halfway through the movie. Not only that but it wasn’t an emphasis like other sports movies where you have this massive, invincible opponents, but instead it focuses on the smaller behind the scenes of the sports itself.
Overall, we loved this film and highly recommend seeing it, it is not a typical sports movie it transcends the genre to become something much more. This movie is fully endorsed by Movie Hash for Best Picture at the Oscars. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!

As far as Franchises go, Underworld: Awakening has not disappointed its fan following, despite Len Wiseman, not directing but still being involved in the writing process. Kate Beckinsale is back to play the role she was born to play and play it well, the very beautiful yet dangerous “Selena.” Now, without giving too much away the synopsis of the movie takes place a short time after the end of the second movie “Underworld: Evolution.” After centuries of being unaware of the existence of both Vampires and Lycans/Vampires, Humans finally find the truth, and treat it with great hostility, even going as far as taking extreme military action to “purge” these unwanted infections. Early into the movie Selena gets captured and is placed in a cryogenic state. Twelve years later she gets woken up to find a few surprises, the most important and most instrumental in regards to the movie is that she now has a daughter. The rest of the movie takes the audience in a series of twists and turns, with underground vampire “freedom fighters” to high tech laboratories.
Now, as I said this film was in no way a disappointment to the Underworld franchise It still delivers great action scenes, with a series of powerful antagonists, because let’s face it after killing off two of the most powerful Elders What can possibly top that as a challenge to the original and most deadly “Death Dealer.” Now just imagine a Werewolf that has been pumped full of steroids and a lot more powerful than William (The original Werewolf) and you got yourself a very powerful enemy, and this time Scott Speedman’s character is out of the picture.
As everyone knows with the advertisements this is the first Underworld movie to be filmed in both IMAX and 3-D. I’m going to tell everyone this right now, save the extra dollars to see it in 3-D and get yourself a snack with it because it is 100% not worth it to see it in 3-D. If you guys have ever experienced a 3-D movie you would expect better depth perception and/or an occasional item or object heading right at you. I’m sorry to disappoint but there is no such gratification of a bullet whizzing by as Selena or anyone else empties clip after clip of ammunition.
To conclude this review, the directors of “Underworld: Awakening,” Mans Marlind, and Bjorn Stein have kept true to the Underworld mythology and characters. Despite Selene finding out she’s a mother, she does not break character, but in fact gives her more character development. Something that’s always hard to do when you switch directors in a franchise. I would not recommend this film to someone who does not know the backstory, as they would be very confused as to what’s going on, diving into the middle of a story with no prior knowledge of events is surely asking for a non enjoyable time at the theater. But for those of you that enjoy the series it definitely is a must see.
Let me know what you guys think of this review, and you’re thoughts on the movie.

Before I get into my thoughts on the film Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close I have to preface this review with the following dreaded words, “I did read the book.” I say this because the movie which stars Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock as well as a solid turn from child actor Thomas Horn as the socially awkward child reeling from his dad’s death at the World Trade Center on 9/11 is good, just not as good as the book. The book from Jonathan Safron Foer takes a terribly tragic subject and handles it with amazing subtlety. This is hard to translate to the silver screen. The film is just over two hours and needed to be at least 30 minutes longer. Any movie about 9/11 is going to have to fight to not simply be a tragic tale, but to tell us something more about life and how people deal with such great pain.
The movie’s best moments are when Horn is interacting with people around the city while he looks for the lock that a key his father left behind unlocks. In these moments you just see how people react to someone going through a tragic incident and how a child who won’t say no can open so many doors. Fortunately, these parts are plentiful throughout the film, and continue when Horn’s character Oskar Schell enlists the help of his estranged grandfather played by Max von Sydow who was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor for his work. I would love to tell you that this is the only part of the film that exists unfortunately the ending of the movie did have to end on a very sappy note.
At the conclusion, director Stephen Daldry along with screenplay writer Eric Roth throw all caution to the wind and pour on the sap like Lindsey Lohan takes shots at the bar. I won’t spoil the ending for you just know that a scrapbook and a lot of tears are involved. Overall this is a solid film that was nominated for Best Picture, but it is only three out of four stars for me. It is worth seeing but I would wait until this film comes to your nearest movie rental store.
Let me know what you thought of the movie in the comments below! Thanks
Kyle
